About Us

The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Haifa fosters the connection between research and teaching in the areas of human, cultural and physical geography.  The Department offers a range of academic programs including undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees, in diverse specialty areas.  Areas of particular focus for teaching and research among Department faculty include Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing, tourism, cultural and historical geography, urban geography and planning, climatology, geomorphology, water resource studies, and emergency and disaster response management.  To advance these areas, the Department hosts a number of specialized research and teaching facilities.

The current broad array of courses and seminars, enriched by field courses within Israel and abroad, are designed to provide undergraduate and graduate students with both theoretical foundations and applied techniques relevant for national and international workplace opportunities.

The Department also serves as a host for a number of informational, research and policy programs designed for outreach beyond academia.  We sponsor numerous seminars and conferences, and produce and publish various research reports and policy studies, as well as, Horizons in Geography, a Hebrew language journal dedicated to research in all aspects of the field which the department has published for the past 30 years. In addition, numerous special projects, including “The Atlas of Haifa” and “The Lands of the Galilee” have grown out of joint work in the Department.
